Benefits of Saunas

For years now, investigators have been fascinated with the benefits of taking saunas. The combination of increased core temperature and the restful, wooded environment leave bathers engrossed in a paradoxically relaxed and invigorated condition.

The steam rising from hot rocks bumps the room temperature up to more than 80 degrees Celsius which immediately stimulates several important body systems. In an attempt to cool itself, the body breaks into a sweat, leaking toxins and waste from the deep tissue and organs, through the skin’s surface. Circulation is increased and heart rate quickens as every last capillary is blasted with fresh oxygen and nutrients. The increase of temperature causes the body to react like it would to a fever – lymphatic cell production is increased and the cells are rapidly distributed throughout the body along with other important nutrients. This distribution increases immunity and is said to speed up natural healing processes, including the combat of free radicals and other toxins that cause numerous ailments. Lactic acid, a chemical that builds up in body after physical exercise, is flushed from muscles relieving soreness and aches. Joints are renewed as the entire body undergoes a simulated exertion with no impact or jarring. The increased heart rate and utilization of body processes stimulates the metabolism as the body requires great effort to keep itself from over-heating.

As well, in the event of intense heat produced in the sauna, the body releases endorphins – a natural pain-relieving chemical. This release produces a mild, tranquilizing effect which soothes the mind and mildly relieves physical pain. And, if saunas are taken in the late evening, the over-production of endorphins leads to a healthy deficiency leaving the body quieted and ready for sleep.

Saunas are an excellent way to stir and awaken every last cell in your body. It has been shown that the increased heart rate and cardiac output experienced in sauna leads to a strengthened heart and revived cardiac regulatory system. Plus, you burn a few calories! Traditionally, sauna bathers spend several minutes in the sauna interrupted by multiple dips into cold water (yes, people plunging into a hole in the ice are probably Scandinavian). Taking cool showers and then returning to the sauna simulates an intervallic “workout” which rouses and exercises all body systems.

And finally, saunas are wonderful because of how amazing you feel when you are finished. Traditionally, bathers rest for a period of time after their sauna so the body has plenty of time to soak up all the benefits of the sauna before carrying on with the day. Muscles are relaxed, the mind is clear, and your skin is glowing with radiance. “Feel Better, Look Better, and Sleep Better.”
